Waxcaps are brightly coloured fungi which are worth looking out for now in unimproved grasslands. This one, Hygrocybe splendidissima, was from Jack Scout on November 4th.

These yellow waxcaps, Hygrocybe chlorophana are fairly common at the moment in unimproved grasslands. The caps are very sticky, and can be yellow or more orange.

fwautumnfruits

Many folk are reporting good apple and pear crops this year. Likewise the autumn fruits at Gait Barrows (18.10.07) are a very good crop. See the Yew, spindle and holly photos attached. The Yew in particular were attracting a good number of Redwing and Fieldfare. They eat the red fleshy gelatinous part surrounding the nut but seem to reject the nuts which, like the leaves, are poisonous (at least to humans).
